Changes to Dog & Cat laws for SA

If you’re a dog or cat owner, breeder or seller, changes to South Australia’s laws will affect you. These changes, which include new requirements for microchipping, desexing and breeder registration, are being phased in over the next 18 months, with new standards and guidelines for breeders and sellers taking effect from August 2017.

Microchipping and desexing –it’s compulsory

From 1 July 2018, it will be compulsory for all dogs and cats over a certain age to be microchipped. for more info visit the dog and cat board website:

Dog Registrations

 

    

 

Dogs living within the Council area are required under the Dog & Cat Management Act to be registered annually.
Registrations are due from 1st July each year.

All dogs aged over the age of three months are required by law to be registered. Penalties apply to unregistered dogs. Registration fees are used to fund Council's animal management program including pounds, the lost and found service and an education program.

Replacement registration tags are available from the Council offices for a fee of $5.00
Tags are to be worn at all times to enable identification should your dog wander or get lost.

Changes to dog registration categories

As of 2017, dog registration in South Australia has been simplified. Your dog now falls under one of these two simple categories.

  • Standard Dog : A dog that is both desexed and microchipped (proof required)
  • Non-standard Dog : all other dogs, even if they are exempt from rules around desexing or microchipping, such as dogs belonging to registered breeders, working livestock dogs etc.

Dogs in Public Places

Dogs must be on a lead at all times when exercised in any public area including reserves, pedestrian thoroughfares and shopping areas except in designated off lead areas.

When exercising your dog in an off-lead area you must carry a lead and maintain hand or voice control over your dog. Please observe signs in each reserve.

Owners are also advised that they are to dispose of their dogs waste appropriately.

On leash and Off Leash Designated Areas for Dogs

District Council of Barunga West Animal Management Plan 2012 provides for the provision of “off lead” areas within the Council area.

On Leash and Off Leash Designated areas for dogs are as follows:

Port Broughton :

On Leash areas

-     All residential streets.

-     Beach and foreshore areas between caravan parks (Dalling Street to John Lewis Drive)

Off Leash

-     All other foreshore areas (other than described above)

-     Oval and golf course areas between 7pm and 9am except when sport is being played, at which time dogs must be on leash.

 

Bute

On Leash Areas

-     All residential streets

-     Lawned area on Railway Reserve

Off Leash Areas

-     Bute Oval between 7pm and 9am except when sport is being played, at which time dogs must be on leash

-     All other undeveloped reserves in and surrounding the town of Bute.

 

Tickera

On Leash Areas

-     All residential streets

-     Playground and reserve area

Off Leash Areas

-     Golf Course (24 hours) except when golf is being played, at which time dogs must be on leash

-     All other undeveloped reserves, foreshore areas and oval  in and surrounding the town of Tickera

 

Fishermans Bay

On Leash Areas

-     All residential streets

-     Foreshore between and including playground and reserve area

Off Leash Areas

-     All other areas not detailed above.

 

Alford & Kulpara

All residential streets dogs must be on leash.

All other areas are leash free 24 hours.
